The idea to transfer water from Lesotho to South Africa considered as early as the middle 1950s came to fruition in 1986 with the signing of the Treaty on the Lesotho

Highlands Water Project between the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Government of the Republic of South Africa.
